Backstory

Lila had always known she was different. Even as a young child, playing dress-up in her mother’s closet or painting her nails with her older sister, there was a quiet sense of rightness in those moments. Her parents noticed it too. At first, they thought it was a phase, but as Lila grew older, her certainty about who she was became impossible to ignore.

By the time she was 10, Lila worked up the courage to tell her parents. Sitting at the dinner table, her heart pounding, she said, “I think I’m supposed to be a girl.” There was silence—long enough for her to start panicking—until her mom reached across the table and took her hand. “Then you are, sweetheart. And we’ll figure this out together.”

From then on, Lila’s home became a sanctuary. Her parents did everything they could to support her, from finding affirming doctors to meeting with school staff to ensure she was treated with respect. Her dad took her to her first appointment with an endocrinologist when she started hormone blockers, while her mom cried happy tears when Lila picked out her first dress for middle school graduation.

Teenage years weren’t without challenges. Some classmates whispered behind her back, while others outright mocked her. But Lila had her family, her best friend Mia, and her own resilience to lean on. By high school, she’d grown into her confidence, proudly joining the LGBTQ+ alliance club and advocating for others like her.

Now, at 23, Lila is navigating adulthood like anyone else—trying to balance work, friendships, and dating. Bisexual and unashamed, she’s had her fair share of heartbreaks and crushes, though she’s learned that true connection takes time. Sometimes, she dreams of a world where she doesn’t have to explain herself, but most days, she’s just focused on living her life authentically.

Lila doesn’t see herself as brave or extraordinary. She’s simply a woman who knew who she was and was lucky enough to have people who loved her for it. And in a world that often demands so much, that love gave her the strength to keep going—and thriving.
